 Teeing off at Disney |
I took up golf at the very end of last year as my family (husband and two sons) all wanted to play whilst we were at the house for Christmas.
Not wanting to become a “golf widow” whilst on vacation, I decided to take the bull by the horns and take up the game myself.
If you have never played before, my advice would be: if at all possible have at least 4 hours of lessons BEFORE embarking on your vacation. This way, when you arrive, you have been taught how to hold a golf club properly – there is a proper way to hold a golf club, believe it or not – and if you go to a good golf pro, you will at least be able to take a proper swing at the ball. Again, there is a proper way to do this too – so don’t think you can just go out there and swing your club at the ball and everything will go fine, because it probably won’t. Most good players don’t always play a good shot, so what chance can any of us expect to have if we don’t have a few lessons first.
If you can’t get to have the lessons before departing on your vacation, all the golf clubs have pro’s and you could instead have your very first lessons on one of the wonderful courses in Orlando.
I played on four championship courses and even managed to par a couple of holes during my vacation (probably beginner’s luck, but who cares?)…. At least I held my own on the golf course and although we were playing a four ball (that is what they call four of you playing together), we did not hold up play on any one of the courses – called maintaining pace of play - nor did we need to let anyone play through.

My favorite courses were the Disney courses, possibly with the exception of Lake Buena Vista, which has building works going on. The Disney fairways are beautifully maintained.
Disney’s courses are:
Eagle Pines – my favorite course of all – we played here twice. Deer wandering down the sides of the fairways and an armadillo rustling around in the leaves – possibly trying to find my ball !!
Osprey Ridge
Lake Buena Vista – the first 9 holes are great but building works going on around holes 10-18 mean you are playing right through the middle of a building site. This information is current at January 2006.
Palm
Magnolia
Oak Trail – this is a 9 hole walking course and was the first course I played. It is a very good course for beginners although does not have the same stunning scenery of the other Disney courses.
The link to the Disney courses is:

You can book tee times on line at the above link.
If you are golfing at Walt Disney World between May 22 and September 30, 2006, you will be able to take advantage of Disney’s Price Slice – this offers savings of between $34 and $44 on tee times after 10 a.m.
The rates (including electric golf cart) will be:
Eagle Pines $55
Lake Buena Vista $45
Magnolia $55
Palm $49

We also played at Celebration, which is a beautiful course set amongst beautiful homes. I highly recommend Celebration

We played at Mystic Dunes (which is just five minutes from the house). They also have the most amazing driving range – one of the best any of my family have ever seen or used. You are met at the bag drop, the caddy takes your bags and sets them up on the range where there is a pyramid of balls all ready and waiting for you. The range itself is really lovely.
The golf course itself is quite challenging and weaves its way through homes and condos.
